My husband, Jake, was asked to step down from his position as General Manager for a local restaurant and few weeks ago (the owner just wasn’t ready to let someone else run everything).
So instead of having 2 boys at home, I’ve had a man and 2 men-in-training.
It’s a whole different world.
With Jake’s former schedule, he saw the boys in the mornings, when they were just waking up and gearing up for the day. They got in some wrestling and roughhousing and such, but there was never time to get too wound up. After all, we had places to go and errands to run.
Now he’s home when they are at their most hyper. Or he walks in the door after a meeting or interview and the boys are so thrilled to see him that chaos ensues.
For example, I had gotten the boys settled down after a pretty wild couple of hours. They were happily coloring at the table while I started on some housework. I had music playing, I was motivated and ready to work!
Then Jake walked in the door, the boys flew from the table and my living room exploded in shrieks and flying pillows. And I lost my flow and focus. Needless to say the house is still not clean.
I hate the change in the dynamic of our household. I LOVE the change in the dynamic of our household.
Yeah, I’m having a hard time trying to find my groove. But it’s not about me.
It’s about those two little men-in-training who are getting poured into, loved on, encouraged, and taught by one of the best examples I know (why else would I have married him?); how can I be upset about that?
Boys need their dads, mine have a rare period of time where their Papa can be home almost all day and really focus on them without the weight of work hanging over his head.
He teaches them how to be men, and they remind him what being a man is all about.
Could I really ask for anything more?
About the Author: Heather Schweich is the mom of 2 precocious little boys, Aedyn (almost 3) and Jaron (just turned 1). She loves chasing them all over the place and walking the line between letting them be boys and keeping them from killing themselves. In between their adventures (read: when they’re asleep) you can find her blogging and maybe reacquainting herself with a too long neglected sewing machine or crochet hooks. Check out her blog 2SleepingBabies.
