I never wanted to be a maid. Nothing against anyone who is, it’s not for me. I like to think of myself as domestically competent. But now I realize I’m more than merely competent: I’m a maid, a goddess, master of my kingdom. Only problem is I’m pretty sure no one else sees me in this light. Nope, they see me as mommy – or Renee, wife…who just does it all. I really don’t mind so I’m not really complaining. I know what I signed up for: ass-wiping, snot-swiping, laundry-folding, meal-serving, argument-mediating, transporting, ego-motivating, shoulder to lean on (and the list goes on…).

So this morning when I came downstairs to my smelly first floor (we’re having the floors resurfaced in the main family room – they were supposed to be finished BEFORE we returned), the boys were already at each other’s throats and at the Wii. They are so ready for school to start and I’m ready too. In fact, in the early weeks of the school year, I’m planning a blowout pool party for moms only. Anyway, in the middle of a dispute, they started whining, “I’m starving, I NEED breakfast!” The room they were plating in was a mess and I had just finished changing all their bedding and had the dirty laundry in my hands. As I type this, a child (#3) just approached me and started sifting through things on my desk and whining about being bored!

I know they’re little and this is a stage in my life, yes, it’s my job, The payout will come in the form of good boys, but sometimes it’s hard and I want a little time (a full day or a week) of total freedom. I went to see that movie Eat, Love, Pray a few weeks ago. It was pretty good. I liked the book better but that always happens. The movie though put me in a place of yearning for my days of freedom. How would I just love to roam the streets of Italy with a latte in one hand and wait…Italy? I’ll take an uninterrupted walk around my neighborhood!

So my brother-in-law is visiting today. He’s bringing his 14 year-old son. They live in Chile and will stay for about 5 days. This is the first time since our wedding that they have visited (which is a bone of contention with me). Nonetheless, I’m excited to see them both and especially for my boys to interact with them. My husband is really lame when it comes to speaking Spanish to my kids and I speak at about the same level as a 3 year-old in Spanish so it will be interesting.

Onto another topic…exercise. I ran 14 miles 2 Saturdays ago and haven’t run since. For a week on vacation, I ate ice cream and fried garbage like it was my job. I gained 2 lbs. Good going me – so proud! Starting tomorrow, I’m getting u at the crack of dawn and running. I need to, the marathon is 2 months away!

These four boys have no idea how they’ve changed my life for the better. They may be a few years older now (hopefully I’m a little wiser) but I’m thankful everyday to be their mom. Thankful too for the man who has been my partner on this journey. Family is everything...
