Easy Recipe for Cooking with Your Son

As you already know, I love to involve my sons with cooking.

As the cold weather sets in and they are spending more time indoors, I am always looking for ways to keep them busy without sitting them in front of the TV.  This recipe is the perfect activity for a cold, rainy day – you probably already have the ingredients in your cupboard and your kids will love shaping and eating their pretzels.  Have your son’s friends over and try out this recipe – it guarantees a fun afternoon and gets their imaginations going!

Soft Pretzels

1 package yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
4 cups flour
1 egg, beaten
coarse salt

Measure warm water into a large mixing bowl.  Sprinkle on yeast and stir until it looks soft.  Add salt, sugar, and flour.  Mix and knead the dough.  Give each child a small ball of dough to roll and twist into letters, numbers, snakes, etc.
Grease a cookie sheet and place the pretzels on it.  Brush pretzels with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.  Bake at 425 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.  Allow to cool and enjoy!

Although the pretzels are delicious just as they are, you can be creative with toppings and dips for this recipe.  Dip the pretzels in melted cheese, mustard, or peanut butter, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar instead of salt – the possibilities are endless!
