I suddenly realized yesterday that I’m not as much fun as I used to be. Do you feel the same way? I think it’s because I’m always holding down the fort, trying to be a good example, or too tired to function. I’m the bad cop, the enforcer of rules. I’ve turned into a boring person – even I get bored of listening to me.
What happened to the old me? The carefree fun-loving, energetic bundle of wild child? I used to hate rules. I remember telling my parents that I would never be as strict as them. Look at me now- “No eating outside of the kitchen!” and “No jumping on the beds!”.
I guess as managing life’s everyday challenges weigh on a person; work, kids, healthy living etc…it’s easy to get wrapped up in the details and forget to lighten up. That can’t be a good thing…being so serious. I don’t want my kids to always see me as a serious mom, barking out the rules or robotically going through the motions of living but not really enjoying what life has to offer.
Now that it’s cold outside, I’ve become even more boring than ever. I don’t like the cold much (unless I’m skiing) so getting motivated to go outside and take the kids on an adventure is not appealing. For me, going outside in freezing cold weather to get the groceries is more than enough. It’s lame, I know and unfortunately, we end up watching more TV than I would like or playing with the Wii. That’s not good either. Then, by the end of February, seasonal affective disorder starts to make me miserable.
So what is one to do? I think my kids would appreciate it if I loosen up a bit and have a little fun. I should make myself get outside for at least a short walk. The crisp air and sunshine (when there is sunshine) is great for everyone. Plus, it’ll tire out the children to boot.
