I’ve been back in my normal world since Monday so I’ve had some time to observe my reality and ponder on my experience in Rwanda. I’m not really sure where to begin as I have so much to say…
I never expected to feel so connected to the people I met. Despite our language barriers, we quickly became friends. I came away with a passion to help; to make a difference much more intense than the passion I arrived with. I have a new respect for the people serving in Rwanda (and other developing nations) for their dedication and commitment to making the world a better place.
I never expected to feel so safe. Despite my initial concerns, fostered by misinformation and ignorance, I found my preconceptions more my imagination than reality.
I never expected that the food would be so good! I thought (hoped) for sure I’d eat like a bird and return pre-wedding weight! Unfortunately, that did not happen.
Being back in my cozy home, in my comfortable life with my healthy kids has made me feel both grateful and guilty. More than anything though, it’s made me appreciate the little things more and look for opportunities to make a difference in my own community and beyond.
I’m really excited about taking what I’ve learned from my experience and transferring that to my boys…but I’ll tell you more about that in future posts!
