I definitely feel more patriotic this year than last. After returning from Rwanda, I have a renewed appreciation for the freedom we often take for granted. Freedom from struggle for simple things we’ve come to expect…water, electricity, food, clothing and education.
The mere fact that in this nation we have access to these necessities is something we can’t forget that other people struggle elsewhere for. In our own country, we have people that struggle for resources to gain access, but the bottom line is that they are available. What I mean is that we don’t have to walk a mile or more to get water. People who in fact have limited resources can get help via food stamps, organizations like Goodwill, Salvation Army or Catholic Charities. Elsewhere in the world the one word that is missing is access.
I think it’s important that we take the time to teach our sons this simple lesson and encourage them to help and give back with us. They are our future and together we all should value our freedom so that it continues for generations to come.
