Today the garden is looking bigger!
By Renee Martinez
I need to add some more stones to create a better walkway for everyone, but besides that…it’s coming along nicely!
We planted loads of goodies:
Tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, cauliflower, corn, peas, beans, swiss chard, eggplant, several varieties of lettuce, and a couple different kinds of squash. In pots, we planted basil, arugula, chives, rosemary, lavender, cilantro, parsley, thyme and marjoram…pumpkins and strawberries too. I may be forgetting a few, but you get the general idea…we’re suburban farmers!
The other day I received a local gardening center flyer and son#2 was looking at it and told me we needed to plant a few more things. He said blueberry and raspberry bushes will be very healthy for us. He told me it’s important that we have fresh fruit and that we should also plant a few trees. He suggested a peach, apple and pear to round out our garden. He’s also interested in raising some chickens so we can have eggs and some tadpoles…because they’re cute.
I don’t know who’s more into the garden, the children or the mommy?
We’ve already enjoyed the lettuce. I pick it as often as I can to help the plant grow better. It’s fun for the boys to help me pick it and they learn more about gardening too. They can’t wait to bite into a juicy tomato. Me too!
