Everytime I take my boys for a haircut, Boy #1 (who has very curly hair) complains about the place we go and whines about change. He always says he wants a faux-hawk, but when the lady asks him if she should do one, he tells her not this time.

Today he once again brought up the faux-hawk. I have always encouraged him to do what he wants. My feeling is that hair grows, so who cares what he does? Besides, if I tell him no, he’ll always persist and complain that I prevent him from doing what he wants.

I let him get the faux-hawk…he has very curly hair and despite my desire to let him know how silly it looked, I refrained. He was excited about his trendy cut and I wanted to let this be his choice.

We returned home and hubby gave him an “oh my!” kind of look and said something like, “That’s some hair style. Can you wear that at school?”

So he went on to play, checked himself out in the mirror a few times and within one hour told me he really didn’t like it and would like to have it fixed to look like it normally does. He came to this decision and yet he still was able to see how the faux-hawk looked. I would think that it’s also confidence-building to have the freedom to make such a visible choice…and yet as noticable as it might be, it’s only hair, it’ll grow or can be cut.

He’s never said anything since and neither have I.

These four boys have no idea how they’ve changed my life for the better. They may be a few years older now (hopefully I’m a little wiser) but I’m thankful everyday to be their mom. Thankful too for the man who has been my partner on this journey. Family is everything...
