Oh, to be a kid again! Though time travel still only exists in science fiction, you can live out your childhood ambitions through your own kids. Remember that dream birthday party you always wanted? Be the cool parent and throw your kid a birthday bash she’ll tell her grandchildren stories about one day. Live vicariously and spoil your child a little bit on their special day.

Themes

Theme parties are popular during childhood and often center on popular characters, movies or television shows. In picking a theme, keep the fun age appropriate but also relevant. For example, if you have a tween girl’s birthday party coming up, consider throwing a Justin Bieber party complete with music videos, posters and even a faux cameo appearance by the star himself. If your daughter or son is into superheroes, think about a birthday party themed around a popular character, such as Spiderman, Batman or those featured in The Avengers.

Games

Choosing games for your child’s birthday blowout may be a challenge, but you don’t have to be a party-planning guru to add some fun to your gathering. Try to choose activities that encourage partygoers to mingle and work together. For example, younger children may enjoy traditional games like hitting a piñata or bobbing for apples, whereas older children and teens may enjoy activities that allow them to be the center of attention, such as karaoke. Whatever game you choose, try to tie it to your theme in some way. For example, a traditional game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey can be modified into Put the Tiara on the Princess at a young girl’s party.

Music

Music sets the mood for every party, regardless of age. Furthermore, it can help break the ice if several of your child’s guests do not know each other. Choose music that complements your theme or is otherwise age-appropriate. For example, you may choose the soundtrack to a popular kids’ movie for young children or you may wish to play pop music for tweens and teens. Don’t be afraid to crank up the volume on the music either. Kids like a lot of bass in their music and they like to dance. If you’re worried that loud music will bother your neighbors, consider inviting them and their children to the party..

Décor

You can decorate for the party of your child’s dreams using items purchased in a store or by making your own decorations at home. Homemade décor offers a personalized touch and the Internet is overflowing with ideas for homemade cakes, banners, party favors and other accessories that will match just about any theme. If you are not DIY savvy or if you simply don’t have time to make your own decorations, go online or visit your local party store for ideas.

Even if you’re low on funds, you can throw a great themed party for your child. Game ideas abound online and provide fun, free entertainment. Load up an MP3 player with your child’s favorite songs and enlist creativity-minded friends to help you make decorations. The party your child will talk about for years to come only takes a little imagination and planning.

Thankful for Happiness
