Out of the Comfort Zone Comes Inspiration

Sometimes exploring outside of one’s comfort zone can be really intimidating, so we tread onward inside the realm of what’s familiar and comfortable. While that’s certainly a safer choice, it probably limits our own personal growth. In my opinion, exploring beyond the boundaries of what we know unleashes so many valuable emotions and insights that we can learn from that might otherwise never have been experienced. I’m not suggesting to go bungee jumping if you’re terrified of heights… what I’m saying is try to dabble outside of what you do but not what you know. Think of it as more of exploring on the fringes of your reality. Which brings me to this painting… wow that was a long-winded intro… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This piece is a mixed media collection on paper. I’ve always shied away from watercolor because it looks really hard and frankly I’m just used to oil or acrylic. Also, I rarely work on paper because I’m used to canvas… then I decided one day to try something new and different. I wanted to give watercolor a try. Then in the process, I added some gauche and marker and ink… and voila! This is what I ended up with. It’s an experimental piece and not very practical since it’d be difficult to hang or mount it (though suggestions are welcome). I’m glad I explored it though. It really sparked inspiration at the moment and also to do another piece but larger. What do you think? What have you done that took you outside your comfort zone but you’re glad that you did?
