Have you noticed a shift in how the current generation of kids behaves towards their elders? I’ve noticed that kids seem to lack respect. This is probably a comment that is made about every generation; one complaining about the other.
I heard a story about a mother who entered the locker room to check on her young son and help tie his skates. The coaches weren’t there but they were outside meeting briefly. She entered to hear the boys swearing and saying rude things to one another. Their banter didn’t stop once she entered.
I’m not foolish enough to think this behavior doesn’t exist. On the bus, I know it’s rampant. However, when an adult enters the room (especially a woman) I think our sons ought to know that it’s high-time to stop the cussing.
As a kid, I would refer to my parents friends as Mrs. or Mr. Smith, not Miss Sue or just Sue. What happened to using the last name? Sure some last names a tough to remember much less know the pronunciation, but taking the easier way out is not teaching our kids respect. I’m guilty of this by the way.
Swearing, I was not allowed to swear in front if my parents as a kid. Maybe an occasional slip of shit or ass would be tolerated, but never would I drop the F-bomb. I knew it was disrespectful and would not be tolerated. I will have the same rule with my kids. My 10 year old recently said something that involved the word crap and I had to lay down the law.
I really feel that this lack of respect is reflected in so much of society today. People dress with less regard or concern about their appearance, even at Church or in school!
I really feel that teaching our boys respect is important and starts at home. It’s an important part of being prepared for life.
I could go on about this, but I’d live to hear from you. What do you think?
