TV / Video Game Babysitting Guilt

It’s a mid-year day off from school, muddy and dreary outside and nothing to do. I had plans to take the kids to the zoo with some friends, but we couldn’t get it together and nobody did anything. I stayed in my pajamas until noon.

These days are a challenge for me. I have a hard time getting motivated when I know I’m not on a schedule, then feel guilty for not making the most of a day off. I tried to finish putting the Christmas stuff away and to prepare for our trip to Vermont (we’re going to Smugglers’ Notch on Thursday). Maybe it’s because I’m normally so busy so that when I have a chance to veg-out – I take advantage.

So what did I end up doing? I was on the phone more than I care to admit. Did some laundry (I do a load per day) and just straighten up loose ends around the house. Meanwhile, the boys either played with friends or watched TV, colored, or played Wii. Am I a bad mom for letting the TV babysit them?

I guess when we’re all so busy, it’s not the worst thing in the world to just take a break. As long as they are safe and monitored, it can’t be too bad to have a lame day of hanging out. I shouldn’t feel guilty for not constantly entertaining them. Besides, it’s good that they know that they can play on their own and have fun. Throwing a few lame days in the mix isn’t a bad thing – it gives everyone a break.

When the week begins tomorrow, at least I’ll feel a bit more rested. Now if I could only get rid of this lingering headache I’ve had!
