Valentine’s seems like something boys could care less about. Looking at the male adult population, it tends to be an overlooked or last minute holiday. The idea behind Valentine’s Day is something we should share with our boys, to let the people we care about know how much they mean to us. This is a lesson all kids should learn, Valentine’s or not…but why not teach them to share this special day so that hopefully when they’re older, their significant others will thank you.

Parents with young or old children can still get their boys on board. If you’re boys are older, remind them to at least make or pick up a card for those special people in their lives. If they’re at the dating age, remind them to buy flowers for the girlfriend. Even if you have married sons, a gentle nudge isn’t a bad thing. Likewise, as the parent, be sure to give them a card as well. At the very least, a card is a thoughtful gesture.

This is the Valentine I made for my oldest. He likes getting to hand out something unique to him.

If you have younger children you can rally to do a project with, then I’ve provided a few suggestions below. These are fun to do, a great thing for a yucky winter day and they’ll be so happy to share something they made with someone they love.

  1. Make a card – an oversized card is really fun!
  2. Cookies and decorate with hearts of course.
  3. Heart-shaped chocolates are easy to make.
  4. There are all sorts of crafts you can do – check out this website to get a few ideas.
