We’ve been moving this past week. It’s been more than chaotic for a variety of reasons. You can read a little more about that here. But it’s given me a lot to think about when it comes to the boys’ room.
Aedyn is nearly 3 and has been in his own room for 2 years. Jaron just turned 1 and has slept in our room since he was born. They’re sharing a room in our new place.
My husband, Jake, and I have great visions and dreams for what the boys’ room will eventually look like. Bunk beds, a slide, a rope swing, rock climbing wall/ramp. It’ll be great! Everything two little boys could want.
We talked about starting it now. Not every aspect, but maybe a bunk and a slide. Aedyn would do great! But how would we keep Jaron from climbing?
Above all I wanted a room that they could be boys in. So, for now, my little toddler boys have a room that they can be toddler boys in. Toys, two mattresses on the floor, and a bookshelf. (And a rocking chair, because they are still my babies and I’ll rock them as long as I can!) But in this room they can safely play however they’d like.
With the mattresses on the floor, I don’t have to worry about the wrestling and the jumping and climbing quite so much, not far to fall, and no headboard to cause blood when they fall into it. In fact the mattresses are set end to end, so they have quite a good space for rolling and wrestling around without hitting anything else!
This photo post from a couple months ago might give you an idea of why I’m want so much for them to have a place where they can be boys! I don’t want to be constantly correcting them for using my whole house as a jungle gym; I know this won’t completely eliminate that issue, but I hope maybe it will help.
I know their room will evolve as they grow and I’m glad we’re not rushing them into a room that they’re not ready for…my baby boys will be big boys all too soon and their room will follow suit. But I can’t wait to see their faces when one of their rooms down the road looks like a boot camp course!
